Petal Fold

Petal folds are a fundamental technique used to create a symmetrical shape that resembles a two layered petal. It can be found in classic bases like the Bird base, as well as being used to create additional “points” in a model for things like legs or arms in some cases.

In diagrams, these are usually shown as opening a section and then collapsing the sides inwards to create the flattened result.

The key to a clean Petal fold is accurate pre-creasing and careful flattening of the layers.

Diagrams

1 Step 1
Make a Valley fold to divide the paper in half
2 Step 2
Squash fold one half of the paper to create a diamond shape with the top layer
3 Step 3
Flip the paper over
4 Step 4
Repeat step two, squashing the paper to create another diamond shape
5 Step 5
Fold the top layer of the paper along the angle bisectors
6 Step 6
Fold the top corner down
7 Step 7
Unfold the previous step
8 Step 8
Unfold the angle bisector creases, we're now ready to petal fold
9 Step 9
Fold the top layer up, creating mountain folds along the previously creased angle bisectors
10 Step 10
Continue folding upwards and squashing inwards
11 Step 11
Keep going until the paper flattens out
12 Step 12
Flatten through all the layers to finish your petal fold
