Rabbit Ear folds are a common technique, often used in models to create things like ears, hands, or feet. Rabbit Ear folds involve collapsing a section of paper inwards to form a single, two layered, pointed flap.
In diagrams, they’re usually shown with arrows indicating the inward folding of sides, along with the crease lines representing Mountain and Valleys used to create the layers.
We’ve broken these diagrams down into as many steps as we could to try and give you the best view of what’s happening, and they’re not as complicated as they first appear. As always, accurate creasing and taking your time is key.
Diagrams
1Make a Valley fold to divide the paper in half vertically
2Unfold the previous step
3Make another Valley fold to divide the paper in half the other way, creating a cross fold across the whole sheet
4Unfold the previous step
5Fold the bottom edge up towards the centre. This is known as the Angle Bisector
6Unfold the previous step
7Repeat this on the other side, folding along the Angle Bisector towards the centre
8Unfold the previous step
9Refold both Angle Bisectors, at the same time creating an additional Mountain fold to form a flap
10Continue to fold towards the centre while flattening the newly formed flap
11Carefully flatten the flap, taking care not to crumple the layers
12Phew! That was a lot of steps, but you've made a Rabbit Ear fold
