Squash Fold

A Squash fold is a technique used to flatten a pocket of paper into a wider shape. It is a foundational fold for some bases and more complex folds, and is often used to add symmetry to models.

In diagrams, Squash folds are normally shown with a larger arrow indicating the section to be flattened, and sometimes the newly formed creases are shown alongside.

The key here is to take care and make sure the resulting central crease lines up as shown in the diagrams.

Diagrams

1 Step 1
Start by making a Valley fold to divide the paper in half
2 Step 2
Make another Valley fold, whilst opening the paper apart to make a Mountain fold at the same time
3 Step 3
Continue to push the edge towards the centre, forming the Valley and Mountain folds
4 Step 4
Gradually flatten the layers lining the crease with the centre of the model
5 Step 5
That's it! You've made a Squash fold
